Learn About Cloud

Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered remotely as a service over a network (typically the Internet). Cloud computing entrusts remote services with a user’s data, software and computation. End users access cloud-based applications through a web browser or light-weight desktop or mobile app while the business software and user’s data are stored on servers at a remote location. Cloud computing configurations can operate as a Public Cloud where data resides in the chosen environment of the Cloud provider on the Cloud providers network, Private Cloud where data resides in a customer’s chosen environment in their own private network or as a hybrid of both.

Today there a numerous Cloud based offerings including:

  • Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)

  • Platform as a service (PaaS)

  • Software as a service (SaaS)

  • Storage as a service (STaaS)

  • Security as a service (SECaaS)

  • Data as a service (DaaS)

  • Test environment as a service (TEaaS)

  • Desktop as a service (DaaS)

  • API as a service (APIaaS)

The benefits of transitioning mainstream IT systems and applications into the Cloud include:

  • Flexibility to accommodate business driven usage needs

  • Speed of scalability allowing IT to adjust resources in response to fluctuating business demands

  • Consistent availability as a result of the Cloud provider taking over routine system management and maintenance tasks to a defined SLA

  • Modular based pricing allowing organisations to pay only for what they need

  • Capability to shift Capex to Opex

  • Ability for IT to focus on strategic business impacting projects by outsourcing daily operational tasks to an SLA’d service provider motivated by a “pay per use” pricing model
