Case Study

End User Compute

e-volve expertly delivered a national End User Compute (EUC) refresh project over 6 months of 12,000 assets to 240 cities, regional and remote sites across Australia. The project became the basis of a generational technology and business transformation.

Challenge

The client designs, builds, and sustains assets, infrastructure and facilities and is a leading provider of integrated services in Australia and New Zealand. The company was established more than 150 years ago, publicly listed on the ASX, and employs more than 33,000 employees over 300+ sites. Technology transformation can be challenging for a large organization when 40% of its sites are remote. For this reason, the client contacted e-volve to design, build and execute a EUC refresh project of 12,000 devices to 240 sites across Australia. The EUC refresh strategy was to procure, stage, deploy and deliver workstations, desktops, and laptops with individual employee data migration and post-production support through a change management program. This technology transformation was designed to be the foundation for an accelerated business and innovation platform to pivot more robustly into the future.

Approach

CEO David Simpson headed the e-volve exec and critical business management team. His 20+ years of experience included managing nationwide transformation programs and projects for large organizations and ASX-listed clients. e-volve had a unique 4 phase approach that allowed the many moving parts of the program to be databased with all related dependencies, enabling a substitute scenario and resource scheduling with each unavoidable change:

  • Multiple scoping sessions were conducted with the client’s principal stakeholders to gain a broader understanding of their EUC requirements, expectations, and budget.
  • Extensive further scoping sessions were held with the client's preferred manufacturer to procure and inventory the required technology based on site and user requirements.
  • e-volve’s extensive relational and dependency database was set up to align the product to the user and for the deployment and migration of the resources. Scenario planning was run and presented to the client.
  • A solution presentation was proposed to the client. Three proof of concept (POC) deployments and decommissions were introduced as an Alpha test process before the national rollout.

Solution

e-volve has extensive experience procuring large volumes of technology for specific and national rollouts across Australia. The solution included scoping three device types from different manufacturer’s product options that could be a good fit for the client's entire office workforce. The configurations were selected based on pricing, suitability, and performance factors.

Once the client signed off these devices, e-volve initiated a procurement plan to align the staging, deployment, and decommissioning of the equipment. The devices for the POC were successfully supplied, and the scheduled provision of the entire refreshed fleet was executed.

When the warehouse received the EUC devices, they were booked for staging, loaded into the site deployment cages, and transported to the site to be unpacked by e-volve engineers. The empty cages were then packed with the decommissioned assets and then returned to Sydney for assessment, cataloging, environmental destruction, or repurposing.

e-volve organized and managed the procurement, resourcing, product staging, and transport to and from the sites. They also arranged and supervised the evaluation of the condition and financial value of the returned property with several partners to ensure a consistent approach, solution, and customer experience.
The project took 6 months to complete and involved 200+ engineers, three specialist freight companies, two stagings and decommission technology service hubs and warehouses, and a talented group of e-volve execs, strategists, project managers, engineers, procurement, logistics, and operational excellence personnel.

The client apprised e-volve that their delivery and budget projections were met and the customer experience and internal customer and stakeholder expectations were exceeded.
